  • Overview

    The Wisconsin Legislative Director will provide ongoing support to AFP-WI and AFPF-WI staff, particularly through state policy analysis and engagement with the Wisconsin State Legislature, government officials, coalition partners, volunteers, and activists.  This includes legislative initiatives, strategy and planning for legislation, regulatory reform, and related activities. This individual will be responsible for collaborating with the AFP Policy team on research and analysis of current law and proposed state legislation that fits within the broader scope of Americans for Prosperity and the Americans for Prosperity Foundation.

     

    Reporting to the State Director, working closely with the State Deputy Director and AFP-National policy and government affairs teams, the candidate will assist and participate in the organization's advocacy efforts in the statehouse in support of our policy priorities. A strong candidate will have existing knowledge of policy, process, and personnel in the Wisconsin legislature and administration, experience working in a political capacity, and ability to quickly gather the appropriate knowledge to provide recommendations for new policy initiatives. The candidate should have a commitment to the principles of the organization - specifically, a firm commitment to empowering individuals to improve their own lives, and creating a society of mutual benefit.

    Responsibilities

    • Tracking and scoring state legislation
    • Preparing the biennial state scorecard and legislative awards
    • Assisting the state director, national policy staff, and capability leaders with vetting state legislation
    • Partnering with our communications capability and external vendors to develop press statements, opinion columns, direct mail, digital advertising, and other marketing materials to drive policy and political priorities
    • Leveraging their own comparative advantages to assist chapter lobbyists with direct lobbying of the state legislature and administration officials
    • Preparing, tracking, and vetting documents on elected officials and candidates
    • Preparing talking points for staff on grassroots policy engagement in coordination with our national policy team
    • Assisting Deputy State Director and Grassroots Director in preparing surveys for grassroots engagement
    • Preparing testimony/memos on state legislation in coordination with our policy team
    • Managing educational projects of the AFP foundation as assigned by the State Director
    • Assisting the State Director with coalition building and management
    • Developing a policy competency to complement those of other state chapter staff

    Qualifications

    • Professional experience working in public policy analysis
    • Some experience working in a political capacity or a history of grassroots volunteerism is preferred though not required
    • Strong understanding of the Wisconsin legislative and administrative rulemaking processes
    • Outstanding written and oral communication skills
    • Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving skills
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively on deadline-driven projects
    • A firm commitment to the principles of individual liberty and freedom
    • Competency with Microsoft Office Suite programs
