Want to impact change daily? Concerned Veterans for America (CVA) is looking for a Director of Policy Engagement to direct policy initiatives in support of its efforts. The Director will serve as CVA’s policy expert and be responsible for the management and development of the CVA’s policy portfolio in support of its mission – to preserve the freedom and prosperity that we and our families fought and sacrificed for while in uniform. 

Responsibilities

  • In conjunction with the Executive Director and SVP of Policy, develop a policy agenda for CVA that highlights issues in-line with our larger policy objectives and aligns with the overall mission of our organization and brand.
  • Manage engagement on policy issues across our federal and state teams and develop the strategic plans for the such engagement
  • Become a subject matter expert on issues pertaining to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and Department of Defense (DoD).
  • Manage relationships with research, analysts, and government affairs teams to advance organizational policy goals.
  • Assist on the appropriate messaging to make the greatest marginal impact on both our educational and advocacy activities.
    • Ensure accuracy and timeliness of our messaging.
    • Serve as Brand-Policy approval point of contact for ads, statements, op-eds, etc.
  • Develop and draft scripts for the field teams advancing the issue agenda.
  • Serve as spokesperson for CVA when needed
  • Along with Executive Director and the rest of the organizational leadership team, assist in the development, strengthening and advancement of the CVA brand and efforts. 
  • Collaborate with the organization’s key staff to identify relevant local and national issues that are important to the veteran community groups across various states.  
  • Develop and manage a portfolio of policy topics and positions, including research materials and effective messaging for the organization’s target audiences.
  • Drive a research initiative program that produces original content for the organization based on the policy portfolio. Duties to include managing written products from internal policy team as well as external academics.
  • Develop and implement federal, state, and local legislative policy strategies to advance organizational priorities.
  • Identify and cultivate contacts among policy makers and stakeholders, such as think tanks, academics, advocacy groups, businesses, and government entities.
  • Represent the organization through participation in conferences, coalition meetings, and public events.
  • Assist with organizing policy events such as Hill briefings, policy panels, and roundtables/forums throughout the organization’s various regions.
  • Research, draft, and review public statements, policy analyses, editorials, and other informational materials as needed, in order to maintain consistency with the position and tone of the organization.
  • Develop, maintain, and continually log an internal research library of policy products and resources.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of five years’ experience in policy, advocacy, or analysis, and two years of management experience required
  • Military service is preferred but not required
  • Experience working in a collaborative setting
  • Ability to work in an independent office, yet contribute as part of a geographically diverse team
  • Ability to handle multiple projects in a fast-moving environment
  • Ability to research, interpret, and summarize dense material in a timely manner
  • Must have experience and be comfortable with public speaking; media experience is preferred
  • Ability to multi-task and possess strong attention to detail
  • English language fluency and writing skills are required; Spanish language fluency and writing skills preferred
  • A bachelor’s degree is required; advanced degree preferred
