Overview

The Government Affairs Coordinator will provide ongoing coordinating efforts and resources to support: AFP and AFPF staff, Members of Congress, Coalition Partners, Volunteers and Activists on political activities. This includes legislative initiatives, strategy and planning for legislation, regulatory change and related activities. This individual will be responsible for research and analysis of current law and proposed federal legislation that fits within the broader scope of Americans for Prosperity Foundation and Americans for Prosperity. Reporting to the Director of External Affairs, the candidate will schedule, assist and participate in the organizations advocacy efforts on Capitol Hill in support of our policy priorities. A strong candidate will have existing knowledge of policy, process and personnel within both the House of Representatives and Senate and can quickly provide recommendations for new policy initiatives. The candidate should have a commitment to the principles of the organization – specifically, a firm commitment to advancing every individual’s right to economic freedom and opportunity through free markets.

Responsibilities

  • Provide ongoing scheduling, liaison and resource support services to external affairs team members, Members of Congress, Coalition Partners, Volunteers and Activists on political activities.
  • Monitor, research and analyze federal legislative and regulatory trends that impact our policy areas. Track pending legislation and mitigate as needed.
  • Work closely with the Director of External Affairs in the development and analysis of information for advocacy documents, presentations, in-house research etc.
  • Work with the organization’s state leaders to advance state policy initiatives that complement our federal strategic plan.
  • Compile answers to inquiries from state staff and assist and coordinate with their federal efforts in the states. 
  • Work to advance free market principals by producing advocacy materials such as issue summaries, briefs, advocacy tools, and assisting in the development and articulation of the organization's strategy.
  • Write op-eds and analytical research pieces for publications and media outlets.
  • Advise Director of External Affairs and supporting team members on issues and materials pertinent to the federal strategy.

Qualifications

  • Degree in political science or related field is required
  • Minimum of two years professional experience working in a related field (i.e. policy analysis, Capitol Hill position, etc.).
  • Specialized knowledge of the legislative process within the House of Representatives and Senate is preferred.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, research and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively, in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Integrity, humility, and an entrepreneurial attitude.
